How to Get Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
Your COE proves to a lender that you're entitled to the VA loan benefit. Here are the three ways to request one.
Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is the document that proves to a lender you're entitled to the VA loan benefit. Here's how to get one.
What you'll need
The paperwork depends on your service category, but commonly includes:
- Veterans: your discharge or separation papers (DD Form 214)
- Active-duty members: a current statement of service signed by your commander or personnel office
- National Guard / Reserves: proof of service and character of service
- Surviving spouses: documentation of the service member's status and your relationship
Three ways to request it
1. Through your lender (fastest)
Most VA-approved lenders can pull your COE electronically in minutes through the VA's system. This is usually the easiest route.
2. Online yourself
You can request a COE through the VA's VA.gov portal if you prefer to handle it directly.
3. By mail
You can complete VA Form 26-1880 and mail it in, though this is the slowest option.
How long it takes
Electronic requests through a lender are often instant. Mailed requests can take several weeks.
After you have it
Once you have your COE, you're ready to move into pre-approval and the rest of the loan process.
This guide is educational. The VA is the only authority that issues a COE and confirms your eligibility.
